Introduction to Ayurvedic Medicine: Clinical Principles in Maharishi Ayurveda

Introduction to Ayurvedic Medicine: Clinical Principles in Maharishi Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, is the world’s oldest continuously practiced tradition of medicine. It has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective and sophisticated system of natural health care. Maharishi Ayurveda is a modern revival of this ancient system, which offers comprehensive knowledge for the prevention and treatment of disease and slowing of the aging process.

Maharishi Ayurveda is a holistic system of health care that includes mental, physical, behavioral and environmental approaches. The goal of these approaches is to enliven the body’s inner intelligence, which is the unified organizing principle at the basis of all physiological self-repair and healing mechanisms.

This course will introduce you to the main principles of Ayurvedic medicine. You may purchase the entire course or individual topics. Lectures in Topic Four may be purchased individually.

Participants in the Holistic Education Exchange Introductory Ayurveda Course will receive credit toward completion of the 56-hour Level 1 Certificate Training Program in Ayurvedic Medicine offered by Maharishi Ayurveda Association of America. For details click here.

  • Topic 1: Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Maharishi Ayurveda

Topic 1 introduces the history and background of Ayurveda from the Vedic tradition of India and explains the how Maharishi Ayurveda revives the authentic practice of Ayurveda and integrates it with the modern scientific tradition. Ayurveda aims to diagnose, balance and enliven the biological intelligence that is responsible for the creation, preservation and healing of the body.

Topic 1 includes a discussion of how Ayurveda views the body's inner biological intelligence as the basis of health and healing; how the body's inner intelligence is expressed as three main controlling operators  (the 3 Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha); and how these three fundamental operators can be diagnosed and balanced through natural holistic medicine approaches.

  • Topic 2: Maharishi Ayurveda Modalities

Topic 2 introduces the main Ayurvedic modalities of diagnosis and treatment, including the diagnosis of constitutional type or mind-body type, which is the basis of Ayurveda's individualized approach to prevention and treatment. It also includes a systematic review of the published scientific research on various aspects of Maharishi Ayurveda, and the evidence basis for their use in a modern integrative health care approach.

  • Topic 3: Fundamentals of Diet and Digestion

Topic 3 provides an understanding of the initial Ayurvedic approach for the prevention and treatment of disease which involves assessment and treatment of the state of balance and imbalance in nutrition, digestion and elimination.

  • Topic 4: Ayurvedic Approach to Common Chronic Disorders

Topic 4 provides an understanding of the initial Ayurvedic approach to common chronic disorders including obesity, women’s health issues during childbearing age and during and after menopause, and musculoskeletal disorders.
